STAR Test & Repair Station

The California Department of Motor Vehicles requires a smog check for most gasoline, hybrid, and alternate-fuel vehicles model year 1976 and newer. With some exceptions, the smog test is required on a biennial basis and your vehicle must pass in order to complete registration. All smog testing and repair services must be performed at an authorized station.

University City Service Center is an authorized, STAR Test & Repair station serving the emission inspection needs of San Diego, CA, La Jolla, CA, Del Mar, CA, and surrounding areas.

Why Does California Have a Smog Check Program?

Smog checks were introduced in the 1970s as part of the Clean Air Act. Biennial smog checks are mandatory in most California counties due to a high number of registered vehicles. Regular emissions testing reduces excessive smog, keeps pollutants out of the air, and contributes to a healthier state.

What Happens During a Smog Check?

During a smog check, authorized technicians at University City Service Center will test your exhaust system performance to ensure your vehicle doesn't emit too many pollutants or smog. Our service staff uses special tools made for emissions testing during the smog check. The amount of emissions your vehicle produces is compared to California’s standards, and your vehicle passes or fails depending on the result.

What if I Fail the Smog Check? In the event your exhaust system requires service, you need an authorized Smog Repair station. University City Service Center is certified to perform both testing and repair services. Once repaired, your vehicle must undergo a re-test and pass. If you have any questions about the process, don't hesitate to talk with our team.

Financial assistance through California is available in some instances.

Facts About CA Smog Checks
